I have always loved models. When I was a kid, I collected all versions of them. I had model airplanes, autos, boats, trains - you name it I had it. Naturally, die-cast models were pretty cool, but my favorites were those that you could assemble. I had a 1 48 scale-model flying Fortress that was my pride-and-joy.

When I went to architectural school, I gave it all up. I figured that I could not make a career in models, and should do some-thing else that I enjoyed. Little did I realize what was waiting for me. I actually got a job in architectural model making! If you like working with models and have passable knowledge architecture, this is an extraordinary field to get into. When I make architectural scale models, I get to build complete minute communities. Most of my architecture scale model clients do not want to just have a make of the building that they are proposing. They want a model that reveals the whole surrounding area together with the building. This gives context to the overall vision, and makes it look as if it has already come to life. This is where architectural scale model builders coming in.

One of the cool things about architecture scale model making is how pains-taking it is. Despite all the advances of modern technology, there is still only one way to make an architecture scale model: by hand. Sure, there are some benefits that we have that prior generations did not. The individual pieces of architecture scale models can be stamped out. This saves thousands of hours of work, because you do not need to cut each piece on its own. However, adapting the architecture blue-print to an architectural scale model, creating the pieces, making the molds, trimming the parts, and putting them all together, all still have to be done by human hands. No one has puzzled out a way to automate the strategy.

I'm appreciative that they have not sussed out a way to take the individual crafts-men away from the architecture scale model. This job is a dream come true, and I am glad it can not be done more efficiently by equipment. I think it will be a long time before anyone puzzles out a different way to do it. If it were a matter of assembly line manufacturing architecture scale models, it would be different. You could make one design and have it stamped out by a piece of equipment. But each architecture scale-model is custom ordered, and so each must be custom-made.
